Human in the Loop: Meaning of the Term

“Human in the Loop” is a form of human-machine interaction. The idea behind it is that artificial intelligence, much like a child, needs to be guided and corrected as it learns. 

• “Human in the Loop” refers to the process by which an artificial intelligence is optimized, monitored, trained, and tested for potential weaknesses through human interaction or corrective intervention. 
• Just like a child learning something new, an AI doesn’t get everything right immediately and needs someone to keep an eye on it from time to time. This allows errors to be corrected and processes to be optimized. 
• A simple example: An AI can be trained to correctly identify different bird species based on their size and plumage. The AI will have an easier time with certain birds, while it won’t recognize others correctly right away. 
• That’s why the “human in the loop” must step in from time to time as a human “teacher” to feed the AI new information, which then enables it to make better distinctions. Step by step, the artificial intelligence is trained and supported in its learning process.  
• As the “teacher” teaches its “student” more and more, human and artificial intelligence work closely together. This is a dynamic collaboration in which the strengths of both forms of intelligence complement each other and their weaknesses are balanced out. 
• The areas in which “Human in the Loop” comes into play can vary widely. Human-machine interaction can be used to design recognition apps, but it is also employed in simulation programs or for the development of video games.
