If you want to improve your ping, there are various options available. A high ping is particularly disruptive when it comes to online gaming and video calls.
Improving your ping: the best tips
One source of the problem is other programmes using your bandwidth. You should close these programmes.
- In the Windows Task Manager, you can see which programmes are using the most bandwidth. Close these to achieve better latency.
- Platforms such as Steam or Origin, in particular, automatically update your games at regular intervals, provided this is enabled. This involves downloading large data packets, which can lead to a high ping.
- Streaming services, such as Spotify or Netflix, also use your internet connection in the background.
- Electronic devices or Wi-Fi networks can interfere with your wireless connection and thus increase your ping. Use an Ethernet cable to avoid being affected by such interference.
- Optimise your router settings by selecting the least congested Wi-Fi channel. Enable QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritise important applications and thus improve your ping.
- Use faster DNS servers such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8) to speed up domain name resolution. These can often offer better performance than your internet service provider’s default DNS servers.
- Configure your firewall to prioritise specific applications or games. Create specific rules that allow and prioritise traffic for these programmes.
Registry setting: How to improve your ping
Another way to improve your ping is via a registry setting.
- Press the key combination [Windows] + [R] and type “regedit” to open the Registry.
- Navigate to the path “Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces”.
- This folder contains several subfolders, which you must now examine individually. Look for the folder containing the most files.
- Once you have identified the folder, right-click on it to open the context menu. Here, select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” or “QWORD (64-bit) Value”.
- Name this value “TcpAckFrequency” and click on it. In the window that opens, change the value from 0 to 1 and confirm the change by clicking “OK”.
- After the next restart, the ping should be significantly improved.
