KonMari: What’s behind the tidying method

by Pramith

The KonMari method comes from the Japanese consultant Marie Kondo. If you are looking for a way to bring more order into your household, learn from us how to tidy up systematically.

KonMari method explained in 5 steps

You can take a closer look at the KonMari method on Netflix, because in the series “Tidying up with Marie Kondo”, Marie Kondo explains the most important steps in tidying up. According to her method, it is important to sort out and reorganise your things in the following order:

  • clothes
  • Books
  • Papers
  • “Komono” (kitchen, bathroom, garage and anything else that doesn’t fit into the previous categories)
  • Personally valuable memorabilia

How do I find the beginning?

To tidy up using the KonMari method, take your things in the order described above. Then proceed with each category like this:

  • Start with your clothes. Really clear all the clothes you own out of the wardrobes and throw them in a pile.
  • Pick up each piece individually and decide if you still enjoy it. If it does, keep it, and if it doesn’t, it won’t go back into the wardrobe. You can give it away, sell it or throw it away.
  • Sometimes it is hard to give something up even though we hardly use it or don’t use it at all. According to the KonMari method, you can thank the piece of clothing, the book and the like for giving you pleasure. This makes it easier for you to say goodbye to it.
  • Everything you keep is folded up as small as possible and stored in a way that helps you keep track of what you own.
  • You can put both clothes and objects, for example in containers, upright so that you can always see what is in the container. You can also take containers out of cupboards more easily.
  • So it is particularly important in the tidying up method to get an overview and to keep it. This can often only be achieved if you can also part with things that no longer give you pleasure.
