In this practical guide, we explain the rules you need to follow when using a Ouija board.
Ouija Board Rules: Preparations
According to some reports, Ouija boards can be used to make contact with spirits and the deceased. The summoned entity can point to letters or phrases using a marker, thereby conveying messages to those present. But of course, certain precautions must first be taken to ensure that contact and communication can take place.
- First of all, the location where you use the Ouija board is important. It should not be too bright. It is therefore advisable to draw the curtains over the windows to create a spooky atmosphere. Candles can also be lit to match the mood.
- Make sure you do not hold a séance with a Ouija board in broad daylight. As a rule, you should not start the session until 8 p.m.; this also improves the atmosphere.
- It is best to place the Ouija board in front of you in the center of a table. When positioning it, make sure that everyone involved has a good view of what is happening.
- A typical Ouija session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. To keep to this timeframe, you should keep an eye on the time. Of course, you can use a clock, but it’s more atmospheric to measure the time using the burning duration of an incense stick or a candle.
- Before you can begin, you should, of course, also clarify the questions you’d like to ask the spirit. You can memorize them and recite them from memory, or have a pen and paper ready next to the board. Here you can then jot down the questions and answers during the session.
- Choose someone from your group who will communicate with the spirit and take on the role of speaking during the session. The selected person sits in the center in front of the board; everyone else positions themselves so they are within reach of the marker.
- It is essential to ensure that any potential sources of noise, such as cell phones, are turned off before the session. These disrupt the atmosphere and the personal experience.
The Ouija Board: The Procedure for a Session
A Ouija board should always be used by at least two people. The procedure for each session is the same and is explained in the following steps.
- Those present begin by placing one or more fingers on the pointer so that everyone is in contact with it. It is important that the marker is within easy and comfortable reach and that you do not have to strain to reach it.
- The person selected beforehand to communicate with the spirit begins the session by first asking a few opening questions. These might include, for example, “Is there a spirit in this room?”
or, if you know the spirit’s name, “Is X present and willing to answer us?”
- The Ouija board should now begin to work, and the marker should move to “Yes” or “No.” If it doesn’t work right away, be patient. It often takes some time to receive the first answers.
- If you receive an answer, you should then ask whether the spirit is benevolent. If so, the session can continue as planned, and you can gradually ask questions that the spirit will then answer. If the question about the spirit’s benevolence is answered with “No,” you should end the session.
- Once you have asked all the questions you want answered, or if too much time has already passed, you should end the session. To do so, thank the spirit and say goodbye.
About the Ouija board: Information and important notes
Of course, the effects of Ouija boards and communication with spirits have not been scientifically proven.
- For many, this is simply a game for teenagers. This is evident from the fact that Ouija boards are already being marketed by toy manufacturers.
- Various Hollywood adaptations have also taken up the theme. This led to the films “Ouija: Origin of Evil” and “Ouija: Origin of Evil.”
- However, this does not mean that a séance cannot have a very different effect on those involved. People with psychosis, depression, or similar mental illnesses should generally not participate in a Ouija session. The impressions experienced during the séance can exacerbate these mental conditions and have a negative impact on the participant.
- The same applies to participants who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A séance with a Ouija board should always be conducted while “sober.”
