What is a robot? Simple definition
In general, a robot is a technical device that can perform various tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously.
- Robots have a physical structure consisting of mechanical parts such as joints, arms or wheels. This structure enables the machines to move and perform physical tasks.
- In addition, the technical devices are equipped with a range of sensors. This enables them to perceive their environment and, for example, interact with and react to people. The sensors can take various forms, such as cameras, infrared or ultrasonic sensors.
- A robot is controlled by a control system. This can either be pre-programmed or have a real-time control system. The control system processes the information from the sensors and decides how the robot should react to its environment.
Autonomy of robots
So that the robots know what they are supposed to do, they are first programmed accordingly.
- Programming is done by writing software code or by applying machine learning techniques in which the robot learns from experience.
- Many robots work autonomously. This means that they are able to carry out tasks without human intervention. For example, they can make decisions and adapt to changing environmental conditions. This is particularly useful for the industrial sector.
