Find your Apple Watch: How to locate your device

by Johannes

To find your Apple Watch if you have lost or misplaced it, you can use the “Where is?” feature. To use this feature, you will need another Apple device, such as an iPhone or computer.

Find Apple Watch: Where is?

It’s particularly annoying when you can’t find your Apple Watch and have to search for it for a long time. However, there are functions that can help you find your device more quickly. A good way to do this is with “Where is?”.

  • Note that you must already have “Where Is?” set up on your Apple Watch if you want to use it to find it again.
  • To do this, activate “Where Is?” on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Then when you pair your Apple Watch with your smartphone, the feature is enabled when you activate “Find my iPhone”.
  • To activate “Where is?” on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, open the settings. Tap on your name there and then on “Where is?”.
  • Then you need to tap on “Find my iPhone/iPod touch/iPad” and activate the function.
  • If you want to find your device even when you are offline, you need to activate the “Where is?” network.
  • You can now find your Apple Watch again by opening “Where is?” on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and then selecting your Apple Watch under “Devices”. You can see where it is on a map.
  • When you’re near the device, you can have a sound play on the Apple Watch to help you find it.
  • However, if the Apple Watch is not connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network, it will not appear on the map.

Find Apple Watch via iCloud

If you have lost your Apple Watch, however, you can also find the device again via iCloud.

  • Then open the iPhone search there. Under “All devices”, tap your Apple Watch. You will see where it is on a map.
  • When you are near the device, you can have a sound play on the Apple Watch.
  • Even if you want to search your Apple Watch via iCloud, it needs a connection via WLAN or a mobile network. If there is no connection, the function shows you the last known location for up to 24 hours. If you select “Notify me when found”, you will receive an email as soon as the device is located again.

The Lost Mode

If you can’t find your Apple Watch even through “Where is it?”, you can set it to “Lost” mode to lock it.

  • To do this, go to “Where is?” on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.
  • Select your Apple Watch there and tap “Activate” under “Mark as lost” and then “Next”. You can then enter your phone number and tap “Next”.
  • Now you can enter a message that will appear on the screen of your lost Apple Watch. Then tap “Activate”. This message will now be displayed on your Apple Watch, along with your phone number, so that finders can reach you.
  • When you find your Apple Watch, you can unlock the device by entering your code. This will also disable the “Lost” mode. Alternatively, you can deactivate the mode via your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad or via iCloud.
  • If you want to disable the mode on your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, go to your Apple Watch in “Where is?”. Tap on “Activated” for “Mark as lost” and select “‘Deactivate ‘Mark as lost'”. All you need to do is confirm this process.
  • If you want to deactivate the mode via iCloud, first tap on “iPhone Search”. Then select your Apple Watch under “All devices”. Tap on “Lost mode” and then on “Stop lost mode”. You still need to confirm this too.

For iOS 12 or older: Find my iPhone

“Where is?” can only be used with iOS 13 or later. If you have a device with an older version, you can use “Find my iPhone” to find your Apple Watch instead.

  • To set up the feature on your iPhone, go to Settings ☻ Your Name ☻ iCloud. From there, scroll down and tap “Find my iPhone”
  • Swipe the screen to activate the “Find my iPhone” and “Send last location” features.
  • If your Apple Watch is paired with your iPhone, this will also set it up automatically.
  • If you want to find your Apple Watch again, you’ll need to sign in via iCloud or Find My iPhone to do so. Then you can view the location of your Smartwatch on a map.
