Lost iPad – what you can do

by Michaela

The iPad, like all Apple devices, has a “Find My iPad” function. If this was activated when you lost your device, you can locate the iPad remotely, lock it and delete your data. But even if you haven’t used this feature, you can still take action against misuse.

iPad lost – “Find my iPad “

If “Find my iPad” is enabled on your tablet, you have a good chance of finding it again:

  • Log in to iCloud.com/find on a PC with your Apple ID and select your iPad from the device list at the top. If your iPad is turned on and online, you will see its location on a map.
  • On the top right, you can click Lost Mode to lock your iPhone with a code and send a message to the lock screen. This way you can ask a finder to call you.
  • If your iPad cannot be found, you should erase the data on it. To do this, click on “Erase iPad”. Note, however, that the device can no longer be located after this.
  • Report the loss to the police. You will probably need the serial number of the device, which you can find on the packaging or in the Apple support profile.
  • To be safe, change the passwords you have saved to auto-fill in Safari as well as your Apple ID password.
  • If your iPad has a SIM card, block it with your network provider.

iPad lost – “Find my iPad” not activated

If you have not activated the search function on the iPad, you cannot locate the device. However, you can still protect your data:

  • To prevent unauthorised people from using Apple services such as iCloud or the Store on your iPad, change your Apple ID password.
  • You should also change the passwords of other accounts you have used on the iPad.
  • If your iPad has a SIM card, block it with your network operator.

Report the loss to the police. You can find the serial number on the packaging or in your Apple support profile.
