How hot is a lighter? Everything you need to know about temperature and fuel

by Estelle

How hot a lighter gets depends on the type and the fuel used. Temperatures in the hundreds of degrees can be reached.

How hot a lighter is: Simply explained

On a lighter, the hottest point is at the end of the blue zone—that is, far down at the base of the flame. But how high a temperature a lighter can reach depends on various factors.

  • Depending on where you measure the temperature of the lighter’s flame, you’ll get different results.
  • In the blue zone—the hottest part—a lighter can reach temperatures of up to 1,300 degrees Celsius.
  • Where the flame appears yellow, temperatures are around 800 degrees Celsius.
  • At the edge of the lighter’s flame, you can expect temperatures of 500 degrees Celsius.

    Different Types of Lighters

Lighters come in various types based on their fuel and operating mechanisms.

    • Gas lighters are the most commonly used. They typically operate on butane gas.
    • Gasoline lighters are powered by gasoline. This is ignited by a flint.
    • Electric lighters use a glowing wire. They do not produce an open flame.
    • An arc lighter creates an electric arc using electrodes. This arc can reach temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees.
