BitLocker: Forgot your recovery key – what you can do

by Johannes

If you have forgotten your BitLocker recovery key, there are several ways to find it again.

Forgetting your BitLocker recovery key: How to find it

To retrieve your BitLocker recovery key, you need to know which account you are logged in with. It is important that you have administrator rights or know who has them.

  • Protection mechanism: BitLocker ensures that the recovery key is kept secure before protection is activated. Depending on the settings chosen when BitLocker was activated, your recovery key may be stored in different locations.
  • Microsoft account: There is a good chance that you will find the recovery key here. Switch devices and open your web browser. Now log in to your Microsoft account. Any device is suitable for this. It doesn’t matter if you have your mobile phone or your tablet at hand.
  • Expression: It is possible that you issued your recovery key when you activated BitLocker. If this is the case, you may have filed your recovery key with other records.
  • Business, school or university account: If you have enrolled a device with a business, school or university email account with an organisation, your recovery key might be stored in that organisation’s Azure AD account. You may be able to access it directly or you may need to contact the organisation’s IT support to gain access to your recovery key.
  • System Administrator: If your device is connected to a domain, your recovery key is most likely held by your system administrator. This is especially the case for business, school or university devices. Contact your system administrator to gain access to your recovery key.
