Nintendo Switch: How to set up parental controls

by Dani

The Nintendo Switch offers an exemplary parental control system. It works either via app or through the console menu. We show you how to activate the protection.

Nintendo Switch: Parental Control via App

The advantages of the app are obvious. You can monitor the console and make settings from your smartphone.

  • Create a Nintendo Account if you don’t already have one and link it to your Nintendo Switch.
  • Download the free Nintendo Switch Age Restrictions app from the App Store or Play Store and link your Nintendo account to the app.
  • Go to the system settings.
  • Select “Age Restrictions”.
  • Select “Set via smart device”.
  • Now enter the six-digit registration code that is displayed in the app.
  • Now link your Nintendo Switch to the app and perform further setup on the smart device.

Nintendo Switch: advantages of parental control via app

The app offers some advantages that are not available with parental control via console:

  • It provides daily and monthly overviews of gaming activities.
  • It reports through push notifications directly from your smartphone.
  • It provides a “good night alarm”.
  • You can manage your Nintendo account very easily through the app.

Nintendo Switch: Parental control via console menu

For those who don’t have a smartphone or don’t need the extensive control via app, you can also set up the parental control in the classic way directly on the console and protect it via password. This is how it works:

  • Go to the system settings and select the item “Parental Control”.
  • Here you can block various functions for your children, such as resetting to factory settings, setting Internet preferences or deleting users
  • You can also set play times for your children in the system settings via “Age restrictions” ☻ “Set about this console” ☻ “Restriction category”. Outside the permitted times or the permitted playing time, the console automatically switches to standby mode.

  • You can also choose between the predefined profiles “Teenagers”, “Children” or “Infants” or alternatively create your own user-defined profile to allow games only for a specific age group.
  • Finally set a pin to protect the facility.
