Firefox: Disable automatic downloads – this is how it works

by Tobias

If you do not want a download to start automatically under Firefox, you can disable this. This way you can prevent files from being installed without you confirming it.

Disable automatic download of files in Firefox

Often there is a default setting in Firefox that allows the browser to start a download automatically even though you have not confirmed it. To prevent this, you can simply disable the automatic download.

  • In Firefox, select the three horizontally arranged menu strokes on the right-hand side.
  • In the menu, click on “Settings” and then under the “General” tab, click on “Downloads”.
  • Set the selection to “Ask each time where to save a file”.
  • The new settings are saved directly. It is not necessary to restart the browser.
