Using Adobe Lightroom without a subscription – is that possible?

by Pramith

Using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom without a subscription has not been possible for a few years. If you want to do this, you have to fall back on an older version of the programme.

Adobe Lightroom without a subscription: What you need to know

Adobe Lightroom, like the other programmes in the Creative Suite, can only be used in a subscription model.

  • Lightroom 6 was the last version that was also commercially available as a DVD version and had a perpetual licence.
  • Lightroom 6 is no longer available for purchase through Adobe. In rare cases, there are offers for the ROM on Ebay or Ebay Classifieds.
  • Generally, however, it is not advisable to buy it. Because the last update of Lightroom 6 was released at the end of 2017. Therefore, RAW files that come from new cameras can no longer be read in the programme.
  • If you don’t want to use any of the alternatives to Lightroom, you will therefore need to take out a Creative Cloud subscription.
  • You can choose between Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC. Both cost 11.89 euros a month.
  • Lightroom CC is the slimmed-down version of the programme. Here you have fewer editing options. Furthermore, there are no options to save data locally on the computer. Instead, they are stored in the Adobe Photo Cloud, which has a storage capacity of 1 terabyte.
  • Lightroom Classic CC has a significantly higher range of functions. In addition, photos can be saved locally here. Adobe Photoshop is also included in the subscription. However, you only have 20 gigabytes of cloud storage.
