On many computers, the numeric keypad needs to be re-enabled after every start-up. To do this, press the ‘Num’ key above the numeric keypad.

Enabling the numeric keypad in Windows

To enable the numeric keypad permanently, you’ll need to make a few changes in the Registry.

  1. Press the “Windows” key and “R” at the same time.
  2. Type “regedit” into the box, click “OK” and confirm the security prompt that appears by clicking “Yes”.
  3. Go to the keyboard settings (“HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard”).
  4. Under “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, set the value to +2.
  5. Example: If the value is 0, enter 2. If the value is 2147483644, change it to 2147483646.
  6. Close the editor and restart the computer. The numeric keypad is now permanently enabled.
