Windows 11: Change password – this is how it works

by Johannes

Changing the Windows 11 password is done with a few clicks. But even with this simple process, there is something important to keep in mind

Windows 11: Change password for local account

Changing the Windows 11 password is an appropriate action to take if you have security concerns. Maybe someone found out your password who should not have access to your PC. Or you may want to move to changing your password regularly for security reasons. Note that we are talking about the local account here. If you want to change your Microsoft password, go to the Microsoft page.

  • Press the Start button and navigate to the “Settings” app using the search box. By keyboard you do this with the combination of “Windows + I”.
  • Now go to “Accounts” in the left column and scroll to “Login Options” on the right side.
  • Under “Log in options” you will find “Passwords.” Note that this item will not appear if you log in to your device with the Microsoft account.
  • Then click on “Change”.
  • Now type in your current password and confirm with “Next”.
  • In the field “New password” enter the new password.
  • Do the same under “Confirm Password”.
  • Under “Password hint”, store a phrase that will remind you of your password should you forget it. Confirm with “Next”.
  • Click on “Finish” to complete the process.

Windows 11: Change password and assign PIN

For logging in to Windows 11, you can assign not only a password, but also a secure PIN. You can use this, for example, to log on to your PC and it may be easier to remember than a complicated password. However, this PIN is not used for all administrative tasks. For many operations, you still need your password. The PIN can also be changed quickly:

  • Click on the Start button and navigate to the “Settings” app via the search field. Alternatively, you can use the key combination “Windows + I”.
  • Navigate to “Accounts” and then to “Login Options”.
  • Under “Sign in options” you will find the item “PIN (Windows Hello)”.
  • Open the tab by left-clicking.
  • Click the “Change PIN” button to open the “Windows Security” window.
  • In the first line you enter your current PIN, in the second the new PIN. Under “Confirm PIN” repeat the new password.
  • Click on “OK” to change the PIN.
