Change PS5 design & theme: What you need to know

As with the PlayStation 4, you can customize the design of the PS5 to suit your taste. Several customization options are available for this purpose.

Change PS5 design or theme: Several options make it possible

The PS5 offers several options for customizing the theme of your welcome hub.

• You can easily change the background of your PlayStation 5. To do this, simply select the Change Background option in the top right corner of the hub.

• You can choose from pre-installed themes or images from your media gallery, games, or directly from PlayStation. These will be applied immediately.

• The dynamic backgrounds inspired by games such as Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, and the remake of Demon’s Souls are particularly interesting. They are animated but do not change the app icons.

• You can move the widgets using the Edit Widgets field, adjust their size, or select which games you want to follow. This makes it easy to quickly access your favorite widgets, such as friend activity or your wish list.

• If you prefer the look of the PS1, PS2, PS3, or PS4, you can restore your console hub to its former glory using the so-called “Appearances” feature. This option has only been available since the end of April 2025.

• To do this, open System in the console settings. There you will find the Appearance submenu. Select Appearance and Sound to choose the PlayStation design you want.

Change the design of your PS5 hardware: Here’s how

With the PS5, you even have the option to change the exterior of the console: You can remove the outer panels (console covers) and replace them with new ones in a color of your choice.

• To remove the outer panels, place the PS5 on its side so that you can see the back and the PS logo at the top.

• Now you can lift the lower left corner and remove it by applying slight pressure upwards and to the right. Repeat the same process for the other side with the front of the PS5 facing you, but start in the upper left corner.

• Then all you need are the new outer panels in a color of your choice. These are manufactured either directly by Sony or by other companies that offer a wider range of designs.

• Simply slide the new covers onto the console from right to left after removing the old ones. If you hear a click, it has worked. Your console now has a new design.

• Tip: You can also give the exterior of your PS5 a new look with stickers. These can even be personalized with services such as Skins4u.

• Before applying the stickers, wipe the covers of your PS5 with a lint-free cotton cloth to remove any dirt. Then slowly stick the stickers onto the cover and carefully smooth them down. Many sticker films can be removed again without any problems.

LED strips for the PlayStation 5: How to enhance the design

If you want to change the color of the PS5 LEDs, this is easy to do.

• Purchase colored LED strips specially designed for the PS5 in a color of your choice. Then remove the two outer panels of your console.

• Then simply attach the colored strip over the original LED strip. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if included.

• Plug the light strip into one of the USB ports on the back of the console. This is one of the numerous ports on the PS5. This is necessary for operation.

• Now your console will light up in the selected color as soon as it is turned on. The strips can be removed again in the same way.
