Telegram: How to search for a specific group
You can find public groups directly via the Telegram search function. However, private groups require an invitation link. External directories and channels can help you search for groups. To search for and find a Telegram group, we recommend following these steps:
- Tap the magnifying glass icon (search function) in the top right corner.
- Enter a search term that matches your area of interest.
- Relevant results will be displayed under “Global Search.” You can recognize Telegram groups by the number of members they have (unlike channels, which have subscribers).
- Tap on a group and then on “Join” to become a member.
- However, this search only works for public groups. Private groups cannot be found using the search function. To join a private group, you need an invitation link, which you must obtain from a member or the group administrator.
- Alternatively, you can also use special Telegram channels or websites that list groups sorted by topic, such as t.me/gruppen or tlgrm.eu. There you will often find invitation links to public groups that you can click on directly to join.
- tlgrm.eu lists numerous Telegram groups and channels sorted by topic. You can search for specific keywords and get a large selection, although many groups are in English.
- At telegramchannels.me, you will also find an extensive collection of groups and channels, sorted by different categories. The platform is well suited for discovering new groups, but the range of German-language groups is limited.
- The Telegram channel “Gruppen & Channel Übersicht Telegram” (t.me/gruppen) provides an overview of various categories and directs you to other channels that list topic-specific groups. This channel is a good choice, especially for German-language groups.
Finding private Telegram groups without an invitation link
Private Telegram groups cannot be found using the search function in the app. To join a private group, you must have an invitation link or be added by an existing member or administrator.
- If you don’t have an invitation link, there is unfortunately no way to search for or join private groups directly. Telegram’s privacy settings prevent such groups from being publicly listed or discoverable.
- Contact people you know who are already members of the private group you want to join and ask them for an invitation link or an invitation from the administrator.
- Check thematically relevant public groups or channels to see if invitation links to private groups are shared there. Sometimes such links are shared in public discussions or on external websites.

Particularly popular Telegram groups and channels are often characterized by large membership numbers and active communities. In Germany, the following topics and groups are among the favorites in 2025:
- One of the most popular Telegram channels in Germany (2025) is “Crypto Insider Deutscher.” With around 2 million subscribers, it is the largest German-language Telegram channel and focuses on cryptocurrencies.
- In second place is the news channel “Insider Deutscher Nachrichten” with just under 2 million subscribers. A total of three of the ten most popular channels are related to cryptocurrencies, which underscores the high popularity of this topic.
- Popular Telegram groups can also be found sorted by category. In 2024/2025, groups such as @PerfectMateMatch (dating), @english_friends_chatting (fun chat), and @Pc_Game_Down_Support (games) are in high demand in the “Life and Entertainment” category.
- In the Knowledge and Business category, groups such as @InnovateAndShare (business), @SocietyofEngineer (technology), and @WritersClub (education) are popular. They offer valuable content for professional and continuing education. In the Art and Creativity category, photography groups such as “Mi Photography Club” or @redditphotography attract many creative users. Groups such as @YogaLearners or @DepressionAndAnxiety are particularly popular with health-conscious users.
- Book lovers appreciate channels such as “Books Mania” with over 80,000 subscribers, which offer free access to books. Music fans find a niche for specific music genres in groups such as “Rare 90’s Hip-Hop.” News and discussion groups on current topics are also very popular.
- Telegram groups and channels on the topics of cryptocurrencies, news, entertainment, education, art, and health are therefore particularly popular. However, the exact choice depends heavily on individual interests.
