Air Fryer: Here’s How Much Electricity It Uses

With its low electricity consumption, an air fryer offers a very good alternative to traditional methods of frying food. It’s more expensive, for example, to fry in a pot on a standard electric stove.

With a hot air fryer, you can fry your food in a much healthier way. This method requires significantly less fat.

  • Hot air fryers generally have a high power output ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 watts. However, the peak power—that is, the maximum power the appliance may require—is only needed for a short period to heat the air.
  • The time an oven takes to prepare the same dish is longer than that of a hot-air fryer. The oven has a lower power rating but typically runs longer, resulting in higher energy consumption overall.
  • Another advantage of the hot air fryer over the oven is that it doesn’t require a long preheating time. The oven, on the other hand, is better suited if you want to prepare a large quantity for several people. This is because a standard hot air fryer can’t hold very much.
  • For a sample calculation, we’ll use a sample appliance as a basis. This appliance has a peak power of 2,000 watts. Let’s consider the preparation of french fries, which takes about 15 minutes in the air fryer.
  • The peak power is only required during the preheating phase, so on average, you can assume a power consumption of about 1.4 kilowatts. If you multiply this power by 15 minutes—or a quarter of an hour—you get an energy consumption of 0.35 kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  • You can assume an electricity price of 37.3 cents/kWh. This means that preparing French fries in the air fryer costs about 13 cents. This is significantly cheaper than using a conventional oven.
