With the launch of Pokémon GO Beyond at the end of 2020, XL Candies were also introduced to the game. There are several ways to obtain XL Candies.
XL Candies in Pokémon GO – how to get them
XL Candies were introduced as part of the major Pokémon GO Beyond update at the end of 2020. You can obtain them in various ways. However, XL Candies can only be collected by players who have reached at least Level 31.
- For example, you can obtain XL Candies when catching Pokémon. The stronger the Pokémon, the more XL Candies you’ll receive. You can get up to three per catch. You’re guaranteed to receive XL Candies when catching evolved, legendary or mysterious Pokémon. Catching Mega Evolutions also rewards you with the coveted XL Candies. You’ll also receive XL Candies when you evolve a Pokémon.
- XL Sweets can also be earned as a reward for reaching the next Trainer level and for hatching eggs. In rare cases, you can receive these special sweets when you send your Pokémon to the Professor. Feeding Pokémon in Gyms can also yield XL Sweets.
- Another way to obtain XL Candies is by exchanging normal Candies. For every 100 normal Candies, you receive 1 XL Candy. However, this method is less advisable, as normal Candies also take a lot of effort to collect.
- You can also increase your chances of getting XL Sweets by, for example, catching Raid Bosses, walking with your Buddy Pokémon, or trading. The greater the trade distance, the higher the chance of getting XL Sweets. XL Sweets can also be earned as rewards for Research.
This is how XL Candies are used in Pokémon GO
XL Candies can only be used on Pokémon that have already reached Level 31. The number of XL Candies required to level up a Pokémon is shown directly in that Pokémon’s profile.
- XL Candies can be used to level up your Pokémon to Level 50. Just as with levelling up to Level 31, this process also requires Stardust. The higher the level, the more Stardust is needed. If you do not have enough XL Candies or Stardust, levelling up is not possible.
- XL Candies therefore allow you to take your Pokémon well beyond their actual maximum level. The higher you level up your Pokémon, the more XL Candies are required for the next level.
