Whatsapp: Mute status: This is how it works

by Corinna

You can mute the WhatsApp status of certain contacts if you don’t want to receive status messages from them. This is done quickly

How to mute the WhatsApp status

You probably have a long list of contacts in WhatsApp and everyone posts a status online from time to time. But you don’t want to receive such messages from every contact. WhatsApp has a practical setting option for this.

  • Open your WhatsApp and then tap on the “News” tab.
  • You can only mute contacts who currently have a status message online. Tap on the corresponding contact whose status you no longer want to see in future
  • You will find the three-dot menu at the top right of the screen. Tap on it and you can see the “Mute” action, among others.
  • Now tap on “Mute”. A window opens in which you must confirm your action again. Tap “Mute” again here. Now you will not receive any status messages from this contact in future
  • Alternatively, you can mute the status of a contact by holding down the corresponding contact with one finger under “Status”. A window opens in which you can tap on “Mute”. No further confirmation is required
  • The description for muting the status of contacts works in the Android version and also in the iOS version.

How to deactivate the muting of a contact

You may have muted the wrong contact in the heat of the moment. Of course, you can also undo this. Proceed as follows.

  • In this case, too, open your WhatsApp and tap on the “News” menu item. At the top right next to the term “Status” you will see the three-dot menu. Attention: do not use the three-dot menu at the top right, as this is where you open the “Settings” for WhatsApp.
  • Tap on these three dots and another window will open. Here you have two options to choose from. Tap on “View all status messages”. You can now select “Mute” at the top of the screen
  • You will now see the contacts that you have muted. Select the relevant contact and then tap the three-dot menu at the top right again. Select “Mute off” here. You must confirm this action again in a separate window with “Mute off”. You can now receive the status messages of this contact again
  • Alternatively, you can swipe the line with the status messages to the right in the “Status” menu until you reach the round “Mute” button. Tap it and the list of muted contacts will appear
  • Select the relevant contact and tap on the three-dot menu. Here you tap on “Mute off”, the confirmation window opens in which you tap on “Mute off”.
  • The above description is intended for when you have subscribed to channels. If this is not the case, tap on the “News” tab. Here you then tap on “Muted messages”
  • Now tap on the contact you want to reactivate. The status is played and you tap the three-dot menu. You can now select “Mute off”. You must confirm this process once again with “Mute off”
  • The procedure for canceling the mute function can be used for both Android and iOS phones.
