Faulty Fuel Injector: Should You Keep Driving or Not? Here’s What You Need to Know

by Tobias

If your fuel injector is faulty and you continue driving, your car’s engine could sustain significant damage.

Faulty Fuel Injector: Continuing to Drive Can Cause These Problems

Since the fuel injector is responsible for supplying fuel to your engine, it is essential, and if it is defective, it can lead to a number of complications if you continue driving despite the problem. If a fuel injector is no longer functioning properly, the symptoms will vary depending on the cause of the defect.

  • A malfunction isn’t always immediately apparent, as it’s also possible that the fuel injectors are simply clogged. You can use an engine system cleaner at home to check whether the issue is merely clogging.
  • If the engine still does not run properly after attempting to clean it, you should take the car to a repair shop at the next opportunity, as regular driving can cause the engine to overheat if the injectors are not supplying enough fuel. The resulting damage is significantly more expensive to repair than replacing or cleaning the fuel injectors.
  • A typical sign of one or more defective fuel injectors is, for example, misfires, which can damage parts of the engine over time and are especially dangerous in traffic, as they lead to a loss of speed when accelerating. When passing other vehicles, this poses a risk of an accident if you lose speed abruptly.
  • If you notice increased fuel consumption while driving your car, this can also be a sign of faulty fuel injectors. Additionally, a noticeable gasoline odor inside the vehicle also indicates faulty injectors.
  • Other symptoms include unusual noises coming from the engine while driving, noticeable jerks while driving or when the car is idling, as well as starting problems if the engine doesn’t start right away as usual. In addition, in many cars, the check engine light comes on when the engine is no longer running smoothly.
