PS5 controller: The buttons at a glance

by Michaela

The Playstation 5 can score with many innovations and also the controller has a new look and an additional button. Find out which button it is in this article.

PS5: Controller Buttons

The design of the new Playstation 5 controllers is very reminiscent of the PS4 pads.

  • On the left side is the control pad with a button for up, left, right and down.
  • Above this there is the create button, which can be used to take and share photos, for example.
  • On the right side there are four function buttons: triangle, circle, cross and square. These have different tasks in games. The cross is usually used to select or jump.
  • There is an option button above these buttons that can be used to return to the menu, for example.
    • In the middle of the controller is the trackpad. This can be used to call up a map in some games.
    • At the front of the controller there are the two buttons L1 and L2 on the left and R1 and R2 on the right in parallel.
    • The two joysticks below the centre of the pad are just as important and well-known. These can also be pressed in and are assigned L3 and R3.
    • Between the sticks there is the familiar home button, which is used to return to the Playstation’s home menu.
    • Below this button there is now the new mute button, with which you are able to mute yourself.

More new features on the PS5 controller

In addition to the new button, other features have also been added to the controller.

    • So far, the controllers are available in white, black and red.
    • Overall the pad is wider and rounder.
    • Now the controller lights up around the trackpad and not in front.
    • The create button opens a smaller window than the share button did on the PS4 controllers. Here you can now also set the image format.
    • The R2 and L2 buttons provide haptic feedback. This makes games have an even greater impact on the player and lets them immerse themselves more deeply.
