If you find that it takes too long to earn gold from loot in Oblivion, cheats are a very effective shortcut.
Gold Cheats in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
- The command player.additem f 5000 adds 5,000 gold to your inventory. To execute this, press the Enter key after typing it into the console. You can change the number as you like; 5,000 is just an example here. The letter “f” is the item code for gold. Every item in the game has a unique item code assigned to it. For example, the Dremora Longsword has the code 0003E9C3.
- Using the command kill allows you to kill NPCs without the game registering you as the attacker. Click on an NPC and enter the command. Your opponent is immediately defeated, and you can easily take their possessions. Important NPCs—including those relevant to the main story—cannot be killed and are instead temporarily knocked down. After a short time, however, they regenerate and are responsive again.
- With unlock you can open nearly any lock standing between you and your future riches. As with the kill command, you must first click on the lock in question with the mouse and then enter the command.
- Thanks to player.setcrimegold 0 you’ll immediately lose any bounty you’ve previously accumulated through criminal activities. Alternatively, use player.payfine to pay your bounty. However, if you have stolen items in your inventory, you should use player.payfinethief instead, as this allows you to keep the stolen items, which would otherwise be teleported to the nearest chest for stolen items.
Endless Gold from Dorian
Dorian lives at Talos Square in Imperial City. Thanks to a glitch in the game, it’s possible to get an infinite amount of gold from him.
- For this trick to work, you’ll need to prepare a few things beforehand. First, you’ll need a weapon that’s weak enough not to kill him, as well as a paralyzing potion. You’ll also need to lower his favor toward you several times so you can then bribe him with money. You can lower his favor by either giving the wrong answers in the Persuasion minigame or by using spells such as “Command People.”
- When his opinion of you hits rock bottom, bribe him with gold to raise it again. Repeat these steps a few times to increase the amount of gold in his inventory.
- Next, apply the Paralysis Potion to a weak weapon and attack him once. The paralysis should take effect immediately, allowing you to look inside his inventory. The gold found there can now be looted an infinite number of times.
Shopping Without Gold or Cheats
If you see some fancy armor but can’t steal it because the vendor is always keeping an eye on it, you’ll need to do a little legwork.
- When you run into the item of your choice, you can push it in front of you thanks to the game’s physics engine—which, unlike theft, is completely legal. Move the object of your desire into a corner where the shopkeeper can’t see it.
- But since the shopkeeper is following you, that’s not enough. Lure him to another corner of the store, then sprint quickly to the item, switch to stealth mode, and collect your new treasure. You could hardly get a better deal.
