Geocaching – what is it?

Find out exactly what geocaching is and how it works in this practical guide.

What is geocaching?

Geocaching is the treasure hunt of the internet age: using a GPS device, you search for caches that other geocachers have set up beforehand.

  • At the start of the treasure hunt, you’ll be given coordinates which you enter into your GPS device or smartphone. These often lead straight to the treasure. For some caches, however, you’ll first need to solve puzzles to reach the coveted cache – there are no limits to your imagination.
  • The geocaching community is very active in Germany. You’ll therefore have no trouble finding caches in your local area. The caches are often located in public places and come with a brief description, so that whilst searching you can also learn a bit about your town’s attractions.
  • If you’d like to go on a treasure hunt yourself, you’ll find plenty of caches online. However, the easiest way to go geocaching is with a smartphone. Simply download an app for your Android or iOS device and start searching.
