With the use of the Google Earth software, the game “Geoguessr” enjoys great popularity. However, achieving a high score is not that easy. In this article we explain which tips and tricks you can use to achieve a high score.

This is what you should know: This is how the Google Earth game works

Geoguessr is a geographical guessing game and is based on the Google Earth service. Many fans nowadays compete on the website to get the highest score possible.

  • In Geoguessr you are randomly shown a random place in the world in the form of a Google Streetview image. You have to guess as accurately as possible where in the world this recording came from.
  • You may be in a city, in the mountains or in a desert.
  • You need to identify as many characteristics as possible from the particular photograph that speak for a particular country or region.
  • If you have an idea, click on the corresponding place on the world map. Based on the distance between the actual place and your ranking, you will get points.
  • Five different locations are searched per round. You can reach a total of 20,000 points. To do this, you would have to solve all the puzzles with pinpoint accuracy.

How to achieve the highest possible score

For several years now, players have been trying to get the maximum possible score in a Geoguessr round. To ensure that you too are successful in guessing the locations, you can follow some essential tips.

  • At the place you have landed, first look around calmly but carefully. Be sure to use the controls and move around the landscape to spot possible clues.
  • Local or road signs, advertising posters and telephone numbers with certain area codes can be important clues that speak for a certain country. This is where you can use your geographical knowledge.
  • Also pay attention to buildings and cars. Car brands, left- or right-hand traffic and certain types of house construction speak for different regions of the world.
  • For example, American car brands are not usually sold in Europe and German cars are not necessarily found on the African continent. In former British colonies, left-hand traffic prevails and thatched roofs can be found mainly in northern Germany.
  • The weather and recognisable plants can also be decisive factors. Use mountains, rivers, coasts and other geographical features as a guide.
  • Combine the different clues and slowly work your way towards the solution.
  • Last but not least, you must place the pin for your guess attempt very precisely. Even a few kilometres of distance will cost you valuable points. Therefore, take your time and compare the Streetview image again and again with the 2D map.
