Postcard: standard size and maximum dimensions

The maximum dimensions of a postcard are strictly regulated within international postal traffic. Postcards are therefore standardised in type and size. Deutsche Post stipulates a length between 14.0 cm and 23.5 cm and a width between 9.0 cm and 12.5 cm.

The length of a postcard must be at least 1.4 times the width.

Following these regulations, this results in three permissible formats for a standard postcard.

  • DIN A6: A DIN A6 postcard is 14.8 cm long and 10.5 cm wide. This is the most common format.
  • DIN long: A DIN long postcard is 21.0 cm long and 10.5 cm wide.
  • Maxi format: The maximum permissible format of a postcard is 23.5 cm long and 12.5 cm wide.
  • The paper thickness or weight of the postcard is also regulated. The paper must weigh at least 150 grams per square metre. The upper limit is 500 grams per square metre.
  • It costs 70 cents to send a postcard with Deutsche Post. If you, as the sender of a postcard, do not adhere to the maximum dimensions, your item will not have sufficient postage. The postage may then be increased by a handling fee and collected from the recipient.
