If the microphone of your headset no longer works, this can have various causes. Find out in this practical tip how you can solve the problem.

Headset: Microphone does not work – Error analysis

There are several reasons why the microphone from your headset may not be working. The problem may be with the headset itself or it may be with your computer.

  • First check that all the cable connections are properly attached.
  • If your headset is connected via AUX, check that both cables (speaker and microphone) are connected correctly. If your PC has multiple AUX ports, try a different slot.
  • The newer headsets in particular are connected via USB. Check if the connector is USB 2.0 or 3.0 and connect it to an appropriate port.
  • Be sure to check if your microphone is even turned on. Many headsets offer the option of muting the microphone. The button for this is located on the ear cup or on the cable control.
  • If none of this works, connect your headset to another PC. If it does not work there, your headset is defective.

    Check settings and find fault

If your headset is fine, it is probably due to a faulty setting. Check if your headset microphone is selected as the default microphone on the PC.

    • First select the loudspeaker icon at the bottom right with the right mouse button.
    • Click on “Open sound settings” in the menu that appears.
    • Check under “Input” whether your headset is selected as microphone (see picture point 1). If not, do this manually in the drop-down menu.
      Then click on “Device properties”.
    • Tip: Check if the driver is up to date, otherwise update it. In rare cases, an outdated driver can also be responsible for a non-functioning microphone.
