Lent 2024: How to fast properly and avoid mistakes

Fasting is a long-established method of reenergizing and detoxifying the body. During this year’s fasting period from February 14 to March 30, some people only abstain from alcohol and sweets, while others give up solid food completely. But no matter which form of fasting you choose, there are some important rules and tips to follow to avoid disadvantages – especially for beginners.

  • Start slowly: Instead of cutting out all food overnight, it is advisable to prepare for Lent slowly. Start by cutting out particularly unhealthy foods and then gradually build up to your desired fasting goal. A slow start makes the process easier and reduces the risk of breaking the fast prematurely.
  • Exercise and rest: During the fasting period, it is important to stay physically active and get out into the fresh air regularly. Choose a sport that you can manage well and do it every day. At the same time, you should also allow yourself sufficient rest and avoid stress. Because if your life is currently characterized by excessive stress, this could affect the success of your fasting.
  • Drink enough: A common mistake when fasting is neglecting your fluid intake. During the fasting period, you should make sure you drink enough, ideally two to three liters per day. Avoid sweetened drinks, alcohol and coffee and instead opt for tea, water or medicinal water.
  • End of fasting: After the end of the fasting period, it is important not to immediately return to your old eating habits. Especially after longer periods of fasting, the food intake should be built up again carefully so as not to overtax the body. A slow return to everyday life helps to avoid yo-yo effects and establish healthy eating habits in the long term.
  • Don’t fast alone: It can be helpful not to fast alone, but to join a group or family. Together you can support and motivate each other to successfully master the fasting period and maintain healthy habits afterwards.

Fasting: Health aspects and risk groups

Basically, we want to do something good for our body when fasting. Although fasting offers many health benefits, it is important to speak to a doctor before starting, especially if you belong to a risk group.

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women:Pregnant and breastfeeding women should refrain from strict fasting, as this can have negative effects on the health of mother and child. It is advisable to seek a doctor’s opinion beforehand.
  • Children/adolescents: Children and adolescents are still growing, for which they need the nutrients from their diet. Although it is safe to avoid sweets, solid foods should not be completely avoided.
  • People with certain illnesses: People with physical or mental illnesses, such as depression, eating disorders, diabetes, addictions, cardiovascular disease, kidney and liver disease and cancer, should view fasting with caution or avoid it altogether.
