An Instagram reel is a short video that can be posted on an Instagram profile. You can either edit the videos directly in the app or use an external app. However, if you notice that the video is cut off or shifted when publishing, there are a few possible solutions.
- One reason for the truncated reel may be an incorrect dimension or format. Instagram specifies an aspect ratio of 9:16 and 1080 x 1920 px. In the newsfeed, you can see the video in a 4:5 ratio and in 1080 x 1350 px.
- If your video does not match the correct dimensions, it may be cut off or moved during upload. To make sure you have selected the correct ratio, you can check the reel in Instagram’s preview mode
- Alternatively, you can select the appropriate format in your video editing app. Most apps already have appropriate templates for this.

In addition to the right format you should choose for your reels, there are other tips that can help you create a better post.
- Make sure the quality of the reel is high enough to be uploaded to Instagram. Low quality videos may not render or display correctly, which can lead to playback issues. Among other things, this can also result in a shifted video
- Note also that only portrait mode is displayed in your feed. This means that the side edges of the video will be cut off. You can also see the exact preview in the Instagram app before you post the reel. In the feed, 1080 x 1080 px applies.
- If your videos continue to be moved or cut off, try updating the app. This is because sometimes problems can occur with the app that can be solved by an update.
