This is what “Reindeer Baby” is about

13.3 million views in seven days make “Reindeer Baby” a Netflix hit. The British series is on everyone’s lips, but what exactly is it about?

  • The series tells the story of unsuccessful comedian Donny Dunn, who works in a bar and meets Martha there. Martha pretends to be a successful lawyer. She is attracted to Donny and keeps returning to the bar.
  • An acquaintance becomes an obsession. Martha falls in love with Donny and stalks him. She doesn’t accept rejection. Her nickname for the comedian is “reindeer baby.”
  • And it’s not just stalking that plays a role in the series. Donny also has to come to terms with a trauma from the past.

There’s so much truth in “Reindeer Baby “

“Reindeer Baby” is a hit on Netflix, but not fiction. Only a few details have been changed for dramatic effect. A piquant fact: lead actor Richard Gadd is also the author of the series, as he tells his own story here.

  • Gadd actually had a stalker in his life for four years, but her name was not Martha. The author makes sure that the woman’s true identity does not come to light, because unlike at the end of the series, the real Martha – spoiler alert – did not go to prison.
  • Gadd told the Independent: “The system failed her. […] I can’t emphasize enough how much of a victim my stalker is.” Similar to the series, Gadd has an ambivalent and special bond with his stalker that outsiders find difficult to understand.
  • The fans of the series don’t necessarily accept this and start their own investigations into who might be behind the stalker, girlfriend Teri and TV writer Darrien. Gadd asks viewers to refrain from doing so, because it’s not about pillorying anyone, as he emphasized on Instagram.
