Restore the Google Search Bar on Android—Here’s How

by Corinna

If the Google search bar has disappeared from your Android smartphone, you can restore it in just a few simple steps.

Android: Restore the Google Search Bar – Here’s How

With the Google Search Bar on your Android smartphone, you can perform a search in no time.

  1. Tap an empty spot on the screen and hold down that area.
  2. In the menu that appears, tap “Widgets.”
  3. Find the widget. Depending on your device and launcher, the widget’s name may be “Google,” “Google Search,” or “Search Bar.” Sometimes the widget can also be found in a separate Google category.
  4. If you can’t find the widget, try the following steps: restart your device, check for software updates, update or reinstall the Google app, clear the app cache, or force the app to stop.
  5. Once you’ve found the widget, press and hold it. This allows you to drag it to the desired position on the screen.
  6. Once you’ve placed the widget, the Google search bar will be available again.
  7. Important: Depending on the manufacturer, there may be differences in the placement and appearance of widgets across various Android interfaces, such as Samsung One UI, Xiaomi MIUI, or Google Pixel.

Add, customize, and remove the Google search bar

You can customize the size, shape, and position of the Google search bar on your Android device, or remove it altogether. Here’s how:

    • Add and customize the search bar: Open the Google app on your Android smartphone or tablet. Then tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner. Select Settings and then Customize Search Widget.
    • There, you can customize the search bar in terms of color, shape, transparency, and the Google logo. The changes are automatically saved and applied immediately.
    • Change size and position: To change the position and size of the search bar on the home screen, long-press an empty area of the screen. Select Widgets and look for the Google Search widget. Drag the widget to the desired position. Depending on your launcher, you can resize the widget by dragging its edges (if your device and launcher support this).
    • Reset or Remove: If you want to reset the search bar to its default state, open the Google app again, go to Settings > Customize Search Widget and tap Reset at the bottom. To remove the search widget completely, long-press the widget on the home screen and drag it to “Remove” or “Delete.” Note that on older devices, it may not be possible to remove the search widget.
    • Alternative Methods: The search bar can also be added using alternative launchers (e.g., Nova Launcher) if the default launcher does not support it.
