VLC Player: How to Convert a File to MP3

by Estelle

With VLC Media Player, you can not only play audio and music files, but also convert them to MP3 files. This can be done with just a few clicks.

Convert an MP3 File in VLC Player

To convert a video file directly in VLC Media Player into an audio file in MP3 format, follow these steps:

  1. Open VLC Media Player, click “Media” in the upper-right corner, and then click “Convert/Save.”
  2. Under “Select File,” click the ‘Add’ button on the right and select the file you want to convert.
  3. Then confirm by clicking the “Convert/Save” button.
  4. In the new window, under “Profile,” select the “Audio – MP3” format. If you want to specify the audio settings more precisely, click the gear icon to the right of it. Here, under “Audio Codec,” you can adjust MP3 settings such as the sample rate or bitrate.
  5. During conversion, make sure to select the correct audio track. By default, VLC uses the first audio track in the file. If your video contains multiple audio tracks, you should specifically select the desired audio track in the conversion window.
  6. Under “Destination File,” specify the desired save location and filename. You can do this by clicking the “Browse” button. Make sure the file extension “.mp3” is set correctly, as otherwise you may encounter problems playing the file.
  7. Click the “Start” button to begin the conversion. Depending on the size of the source file and your computer’s performance, the conversion may take varying amounts of time. You should allow a little extra time, especially for very large files or when using older computers.
  8. In addition to the MP3 format, VLC Media Player also supports other audio formats such as AAC and OGG. You can find these options in the profile selection menu as well.
