TV switches itself on – here’s why

Under certain circumstances, your TV may switch itself on without you pressing any buttons. We’ll explain why this might happen and how to stop it.

TV switches itself on – what you can do

If your TV switches on when you don’t want it to, there could be several reasons. For most causes, your TV’s user manual will be helpful.

  • Many TVs have a function that allows you to set your set to switch on automatically at specific times. So make sure this feature isn’t enabled on your TV.
  • The ‘EPG’, or ‘Electronic Programme Guide’, is something of a successor to teletext. As EPG updates can sometimes take a while, they often run in the middle of the night. On some models, the screen remains dark, although there are also cases where the display switches on as well. In this case, you should disable the EPG’s automatic update function in your television’s menu.
  • Newer devices almost always have the HDMI-CEC function. On Samsung televisions, for example, this is called “Anynet+”. All devices that support the CEC protocol and are connected via HDMI can exchange commands. For example, you might switch on your Blu-ray player and it could send a wake-up signal to your TV. If you do not want this to happen, you must disable HDMI CEC in your device’s settings.
  • If you want to be absolutely sure that your device does not switch on automatically, you should simply unplug it. Alternatively, you can, of course, use a power strip with a switch or a timer; as a bonus, this will also save you electricity.
