“We” is a 2019 horror thriller film directed by Jordan Peele. The film has a surprise ending that may not be understood by everyone. You should not be confused by the twists and turns of the film, the film’s ending is simply told, however, it offers room for interpretation.

The ending of the horror film “We” simply explained

The following explanation contains spoilers about the horror film and its ending.

  • The protagonist’s name is Adelaide, Ada for short. In 1986, young Ada goes on holiday with her parents. While visiting an amusement park on the beach, she discovers a mirror labyrinth. She enters it and encounters an identical-looking Ada.
  • Ada silently returns from the mirror cabinet to her parents and 30 years pass. Ada can speak again and has married. She and her husband want to go on holiday with their children. By chance, they return to the scene of the mirror cabinet. Ada immediately feels uncomfortable, but it is too late.
  • Suddenly her supposed doppelganger and identical images of her family members appear and seem to follow her everywhere. Ada and her family flee. Apart from her likeness, none of the other doubles can speak. At the same time, more and more clones, including those of other residents, appear. They wear red overalls and are armed with scissors.
  • Everywhere Ada goes, people have already been killed by their doppelgangers. Ada’s doppelganger tells her that her name is Red.
  • Red also tells Ada that the doubles or clones are called Tethereds. They were created long ago by the government to control humanity. When this failed, the clones were left in underground cities. They lived in isolation, which is why they gradually went mad and became silent.
  • The clones have now come to the surface of the earth to take over. Ada’s doppelganger Red kidnaps her son into the hall of mirrors. However, Ada is able to overpower and kill her. She flees with her family.
  • During her escape, Ada suddenly remembers that she was actually the doppelganger back then, not Red. She had left the original underground and then adapted to life on the surface of the earth. This is also the reason why she was mute for a long time and her clone Red was the only doppelganger who could speak.
  • At the end of the film, the Tethereds form a human chain and hold hands. Presumably there aren’t many places left for Ada and her family to escape to, because you see lots of dead bodies along the way. The Tethereds have already found many victims to end their lives of oppression.
  • These are the facts of the film’s ending. The interpretation of what director Jordan Peele wants to say with this ending is up to everyone. One possible interpretation is that the Tethereds and their originals stand for the two-class society in which there are also oppressed people. They are just as speechless as the Tethereds. It is only when one of the upper class, like the real Ada, now called Red, sees her torment that the motivation to change something about the system becomes great.
