Browsers for PC and Mac in the test

Stiftung Warentest tested eleven browsers for PC and Mac in the September 2014 issue. The well-known giants Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer also had to face smaller browsers such as Opera. We reveal which browser Warentest chose as the test winner and which software turned out to be a flop.

Warentest Foundation: Chrome is the best browser for PC and Mac

Google Chrome wins the browser duel for both Windows and among Mac browsers. The details:

Especially on the Mac, Chrome proved to be extremely fast and loaded the test websites significantly faster than the competition. On the other hand, the browser on the Mac is not quite as versatile as its Windows counterpart – but otherwise there are no differences to the Windows variant.

Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari in the browser test

Firefox: On the Mac, Firefox came in second (score 2.0), and among Windows browsers it came in third (score 2.1). The Mac version is faster than under Windows, but shows some weaknesses in compatibility with some pages and file formats.
Internet Explorer: With a “satisfactory” (grade 2.8), IE is one of the losers in the test. It showed weaknesses above all in URL blocking and is significantly slower than Firefox, Chrome and co.
Safari: Apple’s standard browser comes in last among the Mac applications (score 2.2). The experts criticised the fact that the settings are not as easy to make and the browser is not as versatile. However, a plus point was awarded for iCloud synchronisation with iOS devices.

Test: Firefox and Chrome in a duel
In the latest browser test, the winner of the product test, Chrome, and the second-placed Firefox were also close together:

While Firefox allows you to customise the appearance better, Chrome proved to be the significantly faster browser in the test.
Firefox is convincing with more add-ons, but Chrome’s operation and security are better. So Chrome also wins by a narrow margin.
