How to Find Your Mouse’s DPI: A Step-by-Step Guide to Precise Measurement
- More specifically, the DPI value indicates how many pixels the cursor moves on a PC or laptop screen when the mouse is moved about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch).
- The higher the DPI number, the faster the mouse pointer moves across the screen. This is especially necessary for games that require a high click rate. If, on the other hand, high precision with sweeping movements is required, the DPI value should be set lower.
- To find out what the DPI setting is and how to change it, gaming mice typically have a button that takes you to the corresponding settings menu . Alternatively, for gaming mice, there is special software from the mouse manufacturer that you’ll need to download to your PC. There, you’ll find the customization options, among other things.
- If your mouse doesn’t have this button, you’ll have to take the longer route through the settings. As mentioned earlier, the DPI setting plays a major role in gaming. However, there are other settings that are important in this context.
- The mouse sensitivity affects how the cursor responds to mouse movements. In other words, it determines how much you need to move the mouse to, for example, turn around in a PC game.
- Mouse sensitivity has a similar effect to DPI, yet the two settings function independently of one another.
- The mouse speed also plays an important role. This indicates how fast you physically move a PC mouse. In other words, it is the actual speed at which the mouse moves. This setting is independent of the DPI value.
- Depending on the PC game and genre, DPI, sensitivity, and mouse speed play different roles.
- You may have a low sensitivity despite a high DPI—and vice versa. For example, a low DPI and sensitivity allow for more precise shots, as they enable finer mouse movements. You’ll therefore need to experiment to find the optimal settings for each individual game.
