When many people are using Wi-Fi, the maximum range is particularly important. It is influenced by numerous factors.
Maximum Wi-Fi range: Important information
The range of a Wi-Fi signal depends on numerous factors and can be influenced accordingly.
- Depending on the Wi-Fi standard used (802.11n, ac, ax), ranges of 25 to 250 meters can be achieved. Indoors, you can expect a maximum range of 70 to 80 meters on average, as there are several obstacles that can shorten it.
- In combination with the frequency band used, the range may be shortened or extended. The 2.4 gigahertz band offers more range but is more susceptible to interference, while 5 gigahertz bands do not cover as much space but offer significantly better signal strength.
- Walls in particular significantly reduce the maximum range. The more winding your living space is, the closer you need to stay to the router with your device for the connection to work.
- Other structural elements such as pipes, metal surfaces, or stucco can significantly reduce the range. This also applies to furniture such as mirrors and cabinets.
- Electrical devices such as microwaves, televisions, refrigerators, Bluetooth devices, or cordless phones can cause interference. This in turn leads to a shorter range.
- In addition, the range can also vary depending on the different routers and their signal strength. However, please note that the further away you are from the router, the worse the internet connection will be.
- Tip: To ensure you always get the best range, make sure your router’s firmware is up to date. You can find this on the manufacturer’s website.
WLAN: Boosting maximum range
You can effectively boost the maximum range of your Wi-Fi router.
- To improve the range of your Wi-Fi, you can use Wi-Fi repeaters or a mesh system. These devices act as amplifiers for your Wi-Fi and can therefore bridge larger ranges.
- Powerline systems are also suitable, as they extend the network at LAN speed via power outlets. Each powerline adapter transmits the received LAN signal as Wi-Fi. This even allows ranges of up to 500 meters.
- Make sure that your router is elevated and not in close proximity to a wall or other electrical devices. If the model has antennas, align them accordingly to increase the range.
- Modern Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, in combination with a suitable router and an extension system or repeater, offer ideal conditions for high Wi-Fi range. Try out several device combinations.
- It also helps to select the Wi-Fi channels manually. This allows you to avoid heavily used channels that quickly become overloaded. Instead, choose a less used channel that offers you a lot of range.
