Are you wondering what the IP86 protection rating means? Many smartphones and other electronic devices advertise this rating. We’ll explain what it really means.
IP68 Protection Rating: What Does It Mean?
The IP protection rating indicates how resistant the casing of an electronic device—such as your cell phone—is to the ingress of dust and water. The two digits in the protection rating have the following meanings:
- The first digit indicates how resistant the housing is to dust and contact.
- Level 5 offers limited dust protection. The device is protected against dust in harmful quantities, but it is not completely dustproof. This means that small amounts of dust can enter without affecting its function. Level 6, on the other hand, guarantees that the device is completely dustproof.
- The second digit indicates how resistant the device is to water.
- Level 7 protects against temporary submersion in water; by default, this includes 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. Devices with Level 8, on the other hand, offer protection against continuous submersion, although the exact conditions vary by manufacturer.
IP68 Protection Rating: What You Need to Know
A device with an IP68 protection rating combines dust resistance (Level 6) and protection against prolonged submersion (Level 8).
- Unlike devices with an IP67 rating, devices with an IP68 rating are also protected against prolonged submersion. However, the specific water resistance specifications vary by manufacturer.
- For example, Samsung smartphones with IP68 certification typically offer water protection for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters. iPhones starting with the iPhone 12, on the other hand, offer protection for 30 minutes at depths of up to 6 meters.
- It is important to note that IP68 certification applies exclusively to freshwater. Protection cannot be guaranteed in the event of contact with saltwater, chlorinated pool water, or other liquids. In such cases, it is recommended to use a waterproof case.
