If you notice that your toilet flush keeps running, you should find and fix the cause quickly. Otherwise, the water will keep running.
Toilet flush running – possible causes
Every now and then, the toilet flush may run uncontrollably. This increases water consumption unnecessarily, but fortunately can often be fixed quickly.
- The valve seals can wear out or become damaged over time. This can cause the water to continue running.
- Limescale or dirt in the toilet cistern can also prevent the valve from closing properly.
- The float in the flush tank regulates the correct water level. If it is damaged, stuck or misaligned, the water regulation may be impaired and water will continue to run.
How to fix a toilet that keeps running
You can often stop the toilet from running by flushing it several times. This will solve the problem temporarily, but you will still need to fix the defect in the long term.
- First, turn off the water supply to the cistern and empty the cistern.
- Open the cistern and get a clear view of the valves and the float.
- Clean all components and check the seals. If they show signs of wear or are brittle, replace them.
- Finally, reassemble all parts of the flush tank. Make sure that the seals are seated correctly and that the float can move freely.
- Flush the toilet several times. If the water stops flowing after each flush, everything is back to normal.
