The iPhone 17 is here, but before you can unleash the full potential of Apple’s new model, you need to set up the device.
Preparation: What you should do before setting up the iPhone 17
The time has finally come, and Apple fans can rejoice over the new iPhone 17. Before you can use your new device, there are some important preparations you should make first.
- An iCloud backup is important. To do this, go to Settings under [Your Name], then iCloud, and then enable iCloud Backup. This will back up the data on your previous device.
- Alternatively, you can create a local backup on your Mac or PC. If you use macOS, you can do this via Finder (macOS) or, alternatively, via iTunes on Windows.
- If you have a physical SIM card, you can now remove it from your old device and have it ready with the appropriate SIM tool. If you have an eSIM, you should save the QR code or access data from your mobile phone provider. You can often find this in the online customer portal.
- Charge your new phone before setting it up. It is recommended that the iPhone 17 has at least fifty percent battery life before starting. This prevents it from running out of power in the middle of the setup process.
Step by step: How to set up your iPhone 17
Now you can turn on your new iPhone. Follow the instructions on the screen.
- The first step is to select your language and region. Then connect the device to your Wi-Fi network.
- Next, you will need to set up Face ID. This will secure your device biometrically. Follow the instructions so that the camera can fully capture your face. As a final security step, you can set a six-digit passcode for your device.
- Now it’s time for the data transfer. For a quick start, hold your old iPhone next to the new one. An animated code will appear that you can scan to start the automatic transfer. Alternatively, you can choose iCloud restoration or manual setup.
- The next step is to activate your Apple ID and important services. Sign in with your Apple ID to access the App Store, iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime. Activate “Find My iPhone” to locate or lock your device in an emergency.
- Make sure that Automatic Updates is turned on. This will keep your iPhone up to date.
- In the last step, you can now personalize your new iPhone 17 and get started. Many settings are already transferred when you automatically transfer data from your old device. If you have chosen a different option, you can now select a custom wallpaper and set up widgets on the home screen.
