Thousands of flies on the window – what you need to know

by Johannes

If thousands of flies appear on your window from one day to the next, you need to take urgent action. Although the insects are harmless, such an infestation is disruptive and unhygienic.

Thousands of flies on the window – where they come from

If you notice that you suddenly have thousands of flies on your window, you should take a closer look at the type of flies. There can be various reasons for their appearance.

  • Flies most commonly appear on windows when there is something outside near the window that serves as food for them. The most common type of fly is the common housefly. Excrement, waste, and manure serve as food and breeding grounds for them.
  • These things also attract blowflies and flesh flies. If there are such things near your window, you should remove them. This applies to the outside, but also to everything inside.
  • The smell of carrion also attracts flies. This can be the case, for example, if a bird, mouse, or other small animal has died in or around your house.
  • Flower flies and fungus gnats like to live on plants and in potting soil. They are usually brought into the home with the soil. If this is the case for you, you should combat the flies on your windows with a mixture of vinegar and water.
  • Fruit flies come home with fresh fruit from the supermarket.& nbsp;Fruit fly eggs are found on fruit and are usually not visible to the naked eye.
  • The safest way to prevent fruit flies from appearing is to rinse purchased fruit immediately with cold water and dispose of moldy or rotten fruit as soon as possible.

How to combat flies on your windows

A single fly can lay up to 500 eggs. So just two flies are enough to start a whole colony of not just a hundred, but a thousand flies. These insects most commonly feed on waste. By removing all garbage and potential breeding grounds for flies, you can prevent these annoying insects from appearing. With a few household remedies, you can also make a trap that will kill all types of flies.

  • Take a small bowl. Mix water, dish soap, and a little vinegar in it. Instead of vinegar, you can also add fruit juice or a few peels to the mixture.
  • The flies are attracted by the smell of vinegar or juice. As soon as they come into contact with the liquid, they drown. The dish soap reduces the surface tension of the water so that the flies cannot stay on the surface and sink.
  • Not every fly falls for such tricks. In addition to chemical sprays and other substances that are toxic to the environment, there are also electric fly traps, which are particularly practical for indoor use. As soon as a fly comes into contact with the trap, it is killed by an electric shock.
  • A particularly animal-friendly way to combat flies is with natural scents such as lavender, lemongrass, and scented geranium. Flies and mosquitoes do not particularly like these smells. Appropriate scented sachets or potpourris make them easy to use and often look very pretty too.

    How to prevent infestation

Even better than chasing away and killing flies is preventing infestation in the first place. There are a few things you can do to make sure flies don’t feel at home in your home.

    • Install fly screens on doors and windows. These prevent flies, mosquitoes, and other insects from entering your house or apartment in the first place.
    • Store your food in sealed containers if possible so that its smell does not attract flies. Empty your trash can regularly, especially if it contains food scraps.
    • If you have pets, make sure that litter boxes and cages are cleaned regularly. Be sure not to leave wet food out in the open and only feed your pets as much as they can consume immediately.
    • If possible, trash cans and compost piles should not be located near doors or windows. Otherwise, there is a high risk that animals will be attracted by the smell and find their way into the house.
