Stainless steel is not as easy to paint as other materials. The reason for this is that there are many different types of stainless steel to which paint often has difficulty adhering. We will show you how you can still paint stainless steel.
Why painting stainless steel is so difficult
Stainless steels are particularly pure metals
.
- There is alloyed and unalloyed stainless steel. Depending on the desired properties, different metals are incorporated into the alloy.
- Since paint adheres to the solid material only with difficulty, the correct preparation of the material is crucial for the result.
Painting stainless steel: What you need for this
Unfortunately, simply applying a coat of paint does not work on stainless steel. That’s why you need a few things.
- Since stainless steel needs to be roughened before painting, you need sandpaper in different grit sizes. If you need to remove rust, you will need coarse sandpaper. A 120 grit is sufficient for roughening.
- The metal must also be free of grease residue; a silicone cleaner, for example, is suitable for cleaning and removing it.
- The success of painting stands and falls with the right primer. Zinc phosphate epoxy resin primers are particularly suitable.
- Use a 2-component lacquer as the lacquer.
- You will need paint brushes for application.
DIY: How to paint stainless steel
Once you have all the necessary materials and utensils together, you can start your project.
- Examine the workpiece for rust. If this is present, you must first remove the rust.
- Then sand the entire workpiece with 120 grit sandpaper.
- Then clean the stainless steel thoroughly with silicone cleaner. Take care not to touch the stainless steel with your fingers.
This would apply grease again. - Now apply the primer carefully. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If the product needs to be stirred first, for example, you should do this thoroughly.
- After application, the primer must be completely dry before you can continue working.
- Once the primer is dry, you can apply the paint. Several coats of paint may be necessary to achieve a good result.
- You can provide additional protection for your colored lacquer by applying a coat of clear lacquer at the end.
- Tip: Primers are available in different colors. Gray or transparent primers can be painted quite well.
If you want to paint the stainless steel red or yellow, this color will not cover so well. In this case, you should choose a primer in a similar color.
