Whether peanut flips are healthy is a legitimate question. After all, peanuts are considered a protein- and vitamin-rich snack.
Peanut flips are not healthy: too much fat, too little peanut
Peanuts are nuts with a high protein and nutrient content. Peanuts are therefore ideal as a healthy snack. Anyone who now reaches for peanut flips in the belief that they are eating healthily is unfortunately wrong. Peanuts are only healthy in their unprocessed form.
- Peanut flips usually contain hardly any peanuts. Many manufacturers use cheaper corn flour or semolina. Peanut butter is used for the peanut flavor. Peanut butter is rich in unhealthy fatty acids and sugar.
- Palm oil is also often added to peanut flips. The high heat resistance of the oil makes it so popular with potato chip manufacturers. It is also cheap.
Unfortunately, palm oil is considered unhealthy. Nevertheless, some manufacturers have switched to sunflower oil. But this is also heated during the production process, which creates unhealthy trans fats. - Salt, spice mixtures or flavor enhancers can also be an ingredient in peanut flips, making the snack even unhealthier. In addition, peanut flips, like all types of chips, contain acrylamide, which is considered carcinogenic.
Known and loved: flips with an airy, crispy texture
So there is nothing healthy about peanut flips.
If you still want to enjoy flips from time to time, you can of course do so. However, unprocessed or roasted (without oil) peanuts are healthier. Here you can be sure that you are not exposing your body to harmful substances.
- Peanut flips should be stored in a cool, dark place. Temperature fluctuations can cause the snack to age more quickly.
- The flips are now available in different varieties. In addition to the classic variety, there are also peanut flips that have been “refined” with spices such as paprika, chili, salt or pepper.
- The snack came to Germany in 1963.
Before that, the greasy peanut flips were already very popular in the USA. - The special thing about peanut flips is their airy consistency. This is achieved by mixing corn with water to form a raw mixture. This is heated under high pressure so that the water it contains evaporates. The mixture expands explosively, creating the airy, crispy consistency.
