Coffee with Lemon for Headaches—Here’s How It Works

by Tobias

Coffee with lemon has a similar effect on headaches as pain relievers. However, if you suffer from severe headaches or have a sensitive stomach, you should opt for other headache remedies instead.

How coffee with lemon helps relieve headaches

If you frequently suffer from headaches and have to rely on painkillers, coffee with lemon could be a healthy alternative for you.

  • Pain is transmitted by enzymes called prostaglandins. It is these stimuli that cause headaches in the first place.
  • Since the caffeine in coffee prevents the release of prostaglandins, headaches are already relieved when you drink a cup of coffee.
  • Lemon not only enhances the effect of caffeine but also supports the body’s own pain-relief mechanisms.
  • Pain relievers also often contain caffeine and acid. In most cases, however, they contain acetylsalicylic acid, which is many times stronger.

Coffee and lemon only work for mild headaches

Unlike pain relievers such as aspirin or acetaminophen, coffee and lemon contain only acid and caffeine. These have a positive effect only on mild headaches.

    • However, before you reach for medication, it’s sometimes worth trying a lemon coffee. If that doesn’t help your headache, you can always take your usual medication afterward.
    • Lemon coffee is very easy to make. Make your coffee as usual. Then squeeze a fresh lemon into the coffee.
    • Whether you add lemon juice to black coffee or coffee with milk is a matter of taste. Just keep in mind that coffee with milk contains less caffeine because it’s diluted with milk.
    • Avoid strong black coffee and lemon juice if you have a sensitive stomach.
    • In that case, it’s better to try other home remedies such as water or damp compresses.
