What is hardware? Computer knowledge explained simply

by Mike

What is hardware is a question that arises for anyone who is new to computers. The dazzling world of IT is roughly divided into the two areas of hardware and software. Strictly speaking, however, you can’t have one without the other. We will enlighten you.

What hardware is – what is behind the IT term

Hardware and software are the two things that everything revolves around in the IT world. It’s hard to say which is more important – ultimately, one doesn’t work without the other.

  • Hardware refers to the physical parts. The notebook, the PC or the printer all belong in the hardware sector. The same naturally applies to the inner workings of the electrical parts, such as the motherboard, the RAM or the hard disk.
  • But also the wired or wireless mouse, the external keyboard, the fan and the power supply unit are all components that are part of the hardware. So it’s all about the material components. Optionally, a scanner, printer or webcam can also complete your system as hardware.
  • In short, hardware includes the parts of IT that you can touch and usually also see. An IT profession that belongs to the hardware sector is, for example, the IT technician, who is responsible for the maintenance of individual IT devices.
  • In this century in particular, hardware has changed enormously in order to make better and better use of the internet. Today, many users no longer rely solely on a laptop or desktop. Most people have also been accessing the Internet via smartphone or tablet for some time now.
  • Software, on the other hand, involves programs. This includes the operating system as well as word processing or video games.
Programmer, for example, is an IT profession that clearly belongs to the software sector.
