There comes a time when you simply have to tidy up your Mac. Dozens of unnecessary files have accumulated, taking up a lot of storage space. In this practical tip, we show you two useful tools to free up space.
Clean up your Mac: Uninstall all programs
The simplest way to create space is to uninstall programs that are no longer needed. This can be done using the Mac’s own function, the recycle bin, but program files still remain on the computer. The program AppCleaner provides a remedy.
- After the normal uninstallation of a program on the Mac, it often happens that program data remains in the library, for example the settings or support data. This can sometimes take up a lot of memory.
- Once the AppCleaner program has been installed, it is easy to use. A window appears in which programs can be added via drag and drop.
Once you have released the icon, the program is uninstalled automatically. - AppCleaner also allows you to see all installed applications on your Mac in the program interface. If you select the program, you will see its storage location and the space it occupies. Simply press Delete and the program will uninstall itself completely immediately.
Clean up Mac: Clean up system settings
Not only programs take up a lot of space, but also applications that are necessary for the operation of the computer cause memory problems.
The CCleaner for macOS also clears the cache of the internet browsers Safari, Firefox and Opera.
- In the program interface of the CCleaner you can select what you want to delete. Among other things, you can select the Internet history, the download history and all browser cookies. You can also delete the current session of all your browsers.
- You also have the option of deleting your entire recycle bin with the CCleaner. After a while, a lot of files accumulate in the recycle bin. Emptying it can be very helpful. You can also close all applications that are open in the background here.
- The CCleaner also offers the option of finding and displaying large files on your Mac. You can then decide for yourself whether you want to delete this file or not. The program also shows you duplicates. For example, have you saved the same image twice? Or loaded the same PDF multiple times? Then you can take action here and delete them.
