Connect PS4 controller with PS5: Here’s how!

by Pramith

With the PS5, Sony offers the possibility to connect the PS4 controllers of the predecessor console with the new flagship simply and without additional tools.

Connecting PS4 controllers with PS5 – what you need to do

In order to connect the PS4 controller to the PS5, you need to make a few settings in the PS5 menu. You can find out exactly what those are and what else you need to do below.

  • Before you go through the individual steps to connect the controllers, you should know that you can only play PS4 games on your PS5 with a PS4 controller. For PS5 games, you will still need a DualSense controller.
  • The easiest way to connect the PS4 controller is by using the charging cable. You plug this into the controller and into the USB port of the PS5. Now when you turn on the PS4 controller, the Playstation will ask you which user you want to use the controller with. Confirm your selection and the PS4 controller is connected from now on.
  • Another, slightly more cumbersome, method is to put the PS4 controller into pairing mode by holding down the PS button and the Share button at the same time. This is signaled by the controller flashing rapidly. Now navigate to the settings menu with your PS5 controller, which you can reach via the gear icon at the top right of the screen.
  • In the settings menu, navigate to the Accessories item, select “General” there, and then “Bluetooth Accessories”. Under “found accessories”, your PS4 controller is listed here. Now, as with the other method, you need to assign the controller to a user profile and then you can use it.
