Amazon Prime Video: 4k streaming – this is how it works

by Johannes

On Amazon Prime Video you can enjoy series streams in UHD, i.e. 4k Ultra HD with a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. You can find out which devices you need to receive the 4k content and which series Amazon Prime Video offers in this resolution here.

Movies and series from Amazon Prime Video in 4k

Amazon streams a good 50 titles in UHD or 4k. But your devices need to have a lot to offer for these high-resolution videos:

  • You need a 4k-capable television or a combination of 4k-capable graphics card and monitor. UHD-capable TVs have been available since 2014, for example from LG, Samsung, Sony and VIZIO. We present various UHD TVs in a picture gallery and offer a price and performance comparison for TVs under 55 inches as well as one for 56 inches and more.
  • In any case, the entire chain from the receiver to the picture and sound output devices must have an HDMI connection that supports HDCP 2.2.
  • The XBox One S is also suitable as a UHD receiver for Amazon Prime Videos.
  • In order to receive the streams in full 4k quality, you also need at least a 15 MBit/s internet connection. Netflix and YouTube even recommend 20 Mbps or more.
  • Amazon itself suggests the second-generation Amazon Fire TV for 4k streaming. The cheaper Fire TV stick is suitable for HD videos at 1080p, but not for UHD.
  • With Amazon, you may have to restart the stream several times to get it to run in 4k quality. This is especially true with 15 Mbps connections.
  • All titles are listed in the Ultra HD category, which you can find on the Prime Video homepage.
  • These are mainly original versions of some series , such as “Alpha House”, “Bosch”, “Hand of God”, “Mozart in the Jungle”, “Red Oaks” and “Transparent”. However, with greater demand, the content will certainly grow.
  • In German you will find in particular Sony Pictures classics such as “Godzilla”, “Und täglich greüßt das Murmeltier”, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “The Da Vinci Code – Sakrileg”.
