FritzBox firmware update – how does it work?

If you want to update the firmware of your FritzBox to get the latest functions, you should first make a backup copy. You can find out how to create this and carry out the firmware update here

Step 1: Save the FritzBox settings before the firmware update

Since errors can sometimes occur during the firmware update, you should always save the settings of your FritzBox before every update:

  • Enter the IP of your FritzBox in the address bar of your browser. You can usually find this in the operating instructions or on the back of the device.
  • Please note: You cannot currently access the fritz.box website. You will receive the error message “This Site is Suspended”. You must therefore use the
  • enter your password and click on “Log in”.
  • Click on “System” in the menu on the left.
  • A submenu opens in which you will find the “Backup” item.
  • Set a password for protection and click on the “Backup” button at the bottom. A backup file will now be saved on your computer

Step 2: Update the Fritzbox firmware

Once you have created the backup, you can now update the FritzBox firmware.

  • Switch back to the “Wizards” tab on the left
  • Click on the “Update” or “Update firmware” button, depending on the device.
  • If new firmware is found, the changes will be displayed. If you want to install the update, click on the “Start firmware update now” button at the bottom right.
  • The update will now be downloaded and installed. The FritzBox cannot be reached during the installation. You will not be able to access the Internet during this time. The FritzBox will then restart. The process may take a few minutes, do not disconnect the device from the power supply under any circumstances.
