These countries have the fastest internet in the world

Fast, faster, fastest: Which countries are already surfing at the speed of light in 2023? And where does Germany stand? We shed some light on the subject.

The fastest internet in the world: These countries have it

In January 2023, the Speedtest Global Index was published by Ookla (speedtest.net), which lists those countries that are particularly fast on the internet. These are the top 10 countries with the fastest internet:

  • In first place is Singapore with a rate of 243.55 Mbit/s.
  • In 2nd place is Chile with 224.84 Mbit/s.
  • 211.34 Mbit/s procures China the third place in the ranking.
  • Fourth place goes to the United Arab Emirates with 207.41 Mbit/s.
  • Fifth place goes to Hong Kong with 206.71 Mbit/s.
  • 201.81 Mbit/s brings Thailand into the race – for which it gets sixth place.
  • Monaco comes in seventh place with 200.7 Mbit/s.
  • The USA is in eighth place with 195.31 Mbit/s.
  • Denmark comes in at 195.26 Mbit/s, landing just behind the USA in ninth place.
  • And 10th place goes to Spain with 172.67 Mbit/s.

Internet in Germany: This is the situation

Germany ranks 46th and has a speed of 82.3 Mbit/s. This means that the internet in Germany is significantly slower on average than, for example, our European neighbours Denmark or Spain. There are many reasons for this:

  • In many regions of Germany, copper cables are still the main connection to the internet, instead of modern fibre optic cables. The result is slower internet speeds and lower capacities.
  • The laying of fibre optic cables often requires construction measures that are subject to approval. In Germany, the approval procedures are often lengthy and complicated, which hinders the laying of cables and leads to delays.
  • Germany has many rural areas that are difficult to reach and where laying fibre optic cables is more expensive. This makes it unattractive for internet providers to invest in these regions, leading to an imbalance in the availability of fast internet.
