Thunderbird Send Button Missing: Causes and Troubleshooting

by Pramith

If the Send button is missing in Mozilla Thunderbird, this can have various causes. Often it is due to hidden toolbars and buttons.

Thunderbird Send button missing: Check toolbars

Sometimes it happens that toolbars have been hidden and therefore the button for sending mails is also missing. First create a new mail by clicking on the “Compose” button.

  • In the upper bar of the window you will find the menu item “View”. Click on this and navigate with the mouse to the entry “Toolbars”. Make sure that the entry “Compose toolbar” is ticked. If not, click on the menu item with the left mouse button to activate the toolbar.
  • If you do not see any menu bars in the programme at all, press the ALT key. This will display the menu bar. Navigate to View ☻ Toolbars and check Menu Bar and Compose Menu Bar. This should also make the Send button or menu item visible again.
  • Maybe the button is just missing. In Compose mode, right-click an empty area on the toolbar and select Customise. In the window that now opens, look for the “Send” button. Find it, drag it back to the toolbar and click “Done”.
  • Show toolbars in Thunderbird

Thunderbird Send-slate area not visible: Further solutions

If it is not due to hidden toolbars, try this:

  • Add-ons for Thunderbird can also cause problems. Click on the menu icon and select Add-ons ☻ Manage Add-ons. Deactivate all extensions and restart Thunderbird. If this solves the problem, activate the add-ons one by one until you have narrowed down the faulty extension.
  • Check if you are using the latest Thunderbird version. Click the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner of the program window. Select Help ☻ About Thunderbird. If necessary, update the programme to the latest version and then restart it.
  • You may be working in offline mode by mistake. Check this via File ☻ Offline. If there is a check mark here for Work Offline, remove it.
  • Another option is to repair Thunderbird to eliminate programme errors.
